ME Psychological Therapies

I believe in working within a supportive way to help you process, recover, heal and grow. Deep empathy and a non-judgemental approach are at the heart of my practice. I will value working with you every step of the way. My approaches stem from my core values as a person; relational, person-centred and compassionate to help you explore yourself and your relationship with others.

About Me

I have a long-standing career in both the NHS and University settings spanning more than 30 years. During this time, I have worked as a mental health nurse, lecturer, researcher and private practitioner psychologist in mental health and psychology. I am working towards re-applying for my practitioner psychologist protected status with the Health Care and Professions Council (HCPC). I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of issues over these years from mild to severe and enduring mental health difficulties and have used a variety of different helping approaches under supervision. I also work with the media to offer my expertise in different mental health areas. My published research, publications and presentations at conferences during my academic career can be found under my previous name Dr Michelle Huws-Thomas.

I am trained in a variety of evidence-based therapies including Integrative Counselling, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement De-Sensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) and other approaches.

I am also experienced in working with people who have experienced trauma (using trauma-focused CBT) and am an Europe accredited Eye Movement Desensitisation Re-processing (EMDR therapist)

This means I can work with you in ways that meet your needs and preferences. I continually update my practice with on-going training and supervision.

I am currently undergoing Certificate training in Schema Therapy and Certificate Accreditation in Couples Counselling

My Current Practice

I left my practitioner post in the NHS in August 2021 to work independently as a psychotherapist in my private practice. I have a small but comfortable therapy office based in Llantwit Major town centre and also work online via Zoom. I offer a free initial 30 minute consultation. For EMDR therapy, I engage in person and also use a leading world platform called RemotEMDR

https://www.remotemdr.com/about/

I am able to use bilateral stimulation (BLS) as I would in person which accesses visual, auditory and sensory stimuli for processing trauma memories and experiences.

I receive monthly supervision in Integrative Psychotherapy, CBT and EMDR via accredited supervisors to maintain my registration and ensure my practice is within the BACP ethical guidelines and to protect your safety.
